CALL FOR PAPERS: “Aesthetics Today”, March 1-2, 2012, Helsinki, Finland
The Finnish Society for Aesthetics will celebrate its 40th anniversary by organizing a two-day seminar on the theme “Aesthetics Today” on the 1st and 2nd of March 2012 at the House of Science and Letters in Helsinki. The keynote speaker of the seminar is Professor Richard Shusterman (Florida Atlantic University).
During the last forty years there have been some radical new developments within the field of aesthetics. In form of, for example, environmental aesthetics and everyday aesthetics the scope of aesthetic research has broadened significantly. At the same time more traditional questions concerning the philosophy of art have taken new directions partly because of the new philosophical developments and partly because of the development of new art forms. Thus, during the last forty years, there has been a serious re-evaluation and questioning of the nature of philosophical aesthetics.
The organizers welcome papers reflecting these developments, and the “current state” of aesthetics. Also, papers reflecting the future and the forty coming years of aesthetics are welcome.
The organizers invite people interested in theme of the seminar to send an abstract of their paper to the secretary of the Finnish Society for Aesthetics (petteri.kummala [at] helsinki.fi). One of the two days of the seminar will be in English. It is also possible to offer a presentation in the form of an artistic presentation or a performance. In this case the presenter is advised to keep in mind that the venue is a lecture hall. The abstract should include the name of the presenter, the title of the presentation and an abstract of approximately 300 words. The deadline for abstracts is the 15th of January 2012. Notification of acceptance/rejection will be sent by the 31st of January.
EVERYDAY AESTHETICS – VIII International Summer School of IIAA June 15–18, 2008 Lahti, Finland

The International Institute of Applied Aesthetics (IIAA) is organizing its 8th International Summer School in environmental aesthetics and philosophy, which will take place in Lahti, Finland, and focus on the increasingly popular topic of Everyday Aesthetics. The dates for the school are June 15 – 18, 2008. We invite papers exploring issues of the everyday environment from aesthetic, philosophical, architectural, social, ecological and educational viewpoints. Ph.D. students are especially encouraged to submit proposals, but senior scholars are also welcome.
Discussion will include diverse topics which, in one or another way, connect to the difficult theoretical issues and practical problems that ensue from critical reflection on our everyday experience, i.e., our experience of the environments in which we’re immersed everyday, whether that be home, park, workplace, busy roadway, or city sidewalk. Issues of the everyday have often been neglected in aesthetic and philosophical discussion, which has centered on the arts and scenic nature. As a focal point for scholarly investigation, however, the everyday environment offers rich possibilities. But it also presents a problematically large and heterogeneous field that suggests work be done on such questions as: What are the relevant issues and topics for everyday aesthetics? How to approach these issues? What is the relationship of aesthetic issues to moral, social and political problems in the context of the everyday? How are questions in the field of everyday aesthetics connected with the vital and overriding question ‘How can we improve the quality of everyday life?’
The emphasis will be on aesthetic and ethical approaches, but because broad philosophical issues are helpfully studied together with other, extra-philosophical considerations, we also encourage approaches which are more overtly social, political, ecological, geographical, etc. Time allocated for each paper is 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion. Estetiikan alan väitös: Martta Heikkilä 26.1.2007
Väitös läsnäoloon-tulemisen esteettisestä merkityksestä Jean-Luc Nancyn filosofiassa
Helsingin yliopiston humanistisessa tiedekunnassa 26.1.2007 tarkastettava Martta Heikkilän väitöskirja ”At the Limits of Presentation – Coming-into-Presence and its Aesthetic Relevance in Jean-Luc Nancy’s Philosophy” (Presentaation rajoilla: läsnäoloon-tuleminen ja sen esteettinen merkitys Jean-Luc Nancyn filosofiassa) tarkastelee taiteen asemaa Jean-Luc Nancyn ajattelussa.
Heikkilä väittää, että Nancyn (s. 1940) käsitys taiteesta valottaa tämän keskeisiä ontologisia kysymyksiä uudesta näkökulmasta. Väittelijä tutkii taidetta suhteessa olemisen käsitteeseen ja pohtii miten Nancyn ymmärrys taiteesta kytkeytyy tämän tulkintaan olemisesta ”presentaationa”, läsnäolevaksi-tulemisena. Nancyn taidetta koskeva ajattelu antaa näkökulman niin sanottuun läsnäolon metafysiikkaan ja sen dekonstruktioon. Tutkija esittääkin, ettei Nancyn taiteen filosofia ole pelkistettävissä olemisen ajatteluun.
Tutkimuksessaan Heikkilä selvittää sekä esittämisen synnyn historiallista taustaa Nancyn ajattelussa että taidetta ja estetiikkaa. Hän tutkii käsitteiden presentaatio ja representaatio eroa lähestyen aihetta Martin Heideggerin ja Jacques Derridan sekä Hegelin ja Kantin filosofian kautta. Heikkilä väittää Nancyn kehittävän Heideggerin ajatusta olemisesta kahdella tavalla. Yhtäältä Nancy esittää uudelleentulkinnan ontologisesta erosta, ja toisaalta hän pyrkii radikalisoimaan Heideggerin käsitteen Mitsein, kanssa-oleminen.
Väittelijän mukaan Nancyn ajattelulle ovat keskeisiä ajatukset taiteen olemassaolon alkuperäisestä pohjattomuudesta ja taiteen ja eri taiteenlajien monikollisuudesta. Hän tutkii näitä ongelmia eron ja katkoksen käsitteiden näkökulmasta. Heikkilän mielestä taiteen erottaa filosofiasta se, että taide esittää sen, mikä on ilmeistä ( évident ) mutta ei esiin tulevaa ( apparent ), jos ”esiin tuleva” ymmärretään ”annetuksi”. Väitteen mukaan taiteen kyky purkaa Nancyn ontologiaa perustuu ensi sijassa taiteen käsitteen alkuperäiseen heterogeenisyyteen ja taiteenlajien moneuteen. Taiteessa on siten kyse eroamisesta – taide tapahtuu yksitellen, paikallisena erottumisena.

Martta Heikkilän väitöskirja esitetään tarkastettavaksi Helsingin yliopiston humanistisessa tiedekunnassa perjantaina 26. tammikuuta klo 12.15 (Yliopiston päärakennus, auditorium XIII, Unioninkatu 34). Vastaväittäjänä on professori Paola Marrati, The Johns Hopkins University, ja kustoksena on professori Arto Haapala.
Tietoja väittelijästä:
Heikkilä on suorittanut filosofian maisterin tutkinnon vuonna 1998 Helsingin yliopistossa estetiikan oppiaineessa ja DEA-tutkinnon Pariisi-XII -yliopiston filosofian laitoksella vuonna 1999. Hän toimii tutkijana ja tuntiopettajana Helsingin yliopiston taiteiden tutkimuksen laitoksella.

- Susanna Välimäki: Abjekti-taide, psykoanalyyttisesta lähtökohdasta iljettävän estetiikkaan.
- Max Ryynänen: esteettinen häpeä. Rakkaudesta banaaliin, huonoon ja älyvapaaseen, eli siitä kun joku ruma tai huono tai eettisesti häiritsevä kolahtaa.
- Hanna Mattila: Korsoa vai kartanonkoskea? Onko ruma ylevän arvokasta ja kaunis halpaa kitsiä? Ruma Ympäristö.
- Pia Livia Hekanaho: Liikaa tai liianvähän, ruma ruumis, vino naama. Ruma ruumiissa ja kiihottava ruma.
Osallistujat tuovat mukanaan jotain rumana tai huonona pitämäänsä ja ne kootaan yhteen selityksineen päivän ajaksi. Osallistujat tekevät myös yhdessä huonon taideteoksen. Paikalla on myös estetiikan kirjallisuutta myynnissä.
